thirty something - Yuppies

This is a link to a website describing a hit hour long drama series which ran in the US between 1987 - 1991. I chose this link as I didn't just want to describe what 'yuppies' traditionally were, how they dressed ect. Therefore I chose to blog about this tv show as it showed an indepth view into the domestic and professional lives of a group of young urban people.

The term 'yuppie' originated from the term 'Yup' which stood for Yound Urban Professional, which the show 'thirty something' explored deeply and was very popular merging real characters lives with the actors. The show proved very popular to young people, and the audience watching the show were made to feel as though they were part of the show, sharing the actors lives. As the term 'yuppie' was coined in the 1980's the whole focus of the show was around this.

The characters in the show were connected by their involvement with the peace movement and counterculture of the 1960's during their youth, which is a marked contrast to their current, middle class lives in Philadelphia.

The show lasted four seasons, with 85 episodes, thus showing it's popularity. One could say that a 'yuppie' in today's society would be classed as middle to upper class.
